Children’s mental health refers to their emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how children think, feel, behave, learn, handle stress, and interact with others. Good mental health helps children develop confidence, build healthy relationships, manage emotions, and cope with challenges. Children may experience different emotions such as happiness, sadness, anger, fear, or worry. These feelings are a normal part of growing up. However, ongoing or severe changes in mood or behaviour may indicate that a child needs additional support. Signs can include frequent sadness or anxiety, withdrawal from friends and family, changes in sleep or eating habits, difficulty concentrating, loss of interest in activities, or problems at school. Parents, caregivers, teachers, and other trusted adults play an important role in supporting children’s mental health. Creating a safe and caring environment, listening to children without judgment, encouraging healthy routines, providing opportunities for play and social interaction, and helping children express their feelings can all be beneficial.
Supporting children’s mental health from an early age can help them develop resilience and healthy coping skills. When concerns persist or significantly affect a child’s daily life, seeking advice from a qualified health or mental-health professional can provide appropriate support. |
